The Moon, which so dominates our sky and tides, has been a focus
for different beliefs throughout the ages.
In Roman mythology, Diana was goddess of the Moon. Diana's Greek
counterpart was Artemis, although, unlike Diana, it seems Artemis
was not considered a goddess of the Moon. Diana was commonly worshipped
in wooded places and groves, and the reverence shown to her by women
reflects her role as the guardian and protector of women in childbirth.
