Uranus is a relative newcomer to Astrology, unknown until the 18th
Century, and many have been amused by the hieroglyph, which looks
rather like a television aerial. It is most famous in today's English
speaking world for its troublesome and/or humorous pronunciation.
Even today there seems to be considerable disagreement amongst astrologers
about Uranus.
There is a tenuous agreement amongst many astrologers that Uranus
stands for mechanical inventiveness. Other astrological attributes
include rebellion or revolution, which is often related to whole
populations as well as individuals, eccentricity, independence,
excitability, impulsiveness, the paranormal, and social upheavals. The
attribution of some of these influences is partly due to the discovery
of Uranus coinciding with the period of The Enlightenment, a substantial
upheaval in western society. Upheavals are not necessarily 'bad'
but may be a part of necessary social change, and this kind of change
is also related to change in the individual, sometimes characterized
by some astrologers as transformation. It has belatedly been associated
with Aquarius.
