Basic Personality

A classic Aquarian individual does not automatically respect tradition or convention, but is rather the archetypal non-conformist of society, who questions everything. Here is the influence of Uranus, the Aquarian's ruling planet, who inspires original thought, individuality and independence. The Aquarian is able to accept differences in people and usually embraces the ideal of equality for all. For this reason, Aquarians can be found working in world wide humanitarian organizations, charities or in hospitals, where they are likely to be found in a variety of positions from social workers, members of the nursing and medical staff or in the 'back room' doing medical research. They are also likely to be found in areas relating to other areas of research and development, town planning, or indeed anywhere where their considerable inventive talents can be used indirectly in the service of others. Aquarians usually have a calm, logical approach to administrative roles and a sympathy and sensitivity where they are more personally involved in service to others.

However, their general proclivity towards a humanitarian approach does not always flow as smoothly as might be expected into their 'one to one' contacts, either professionally or in more intimate relationships. Their need to withdraw, to have private time, and their tendency to avoid intimacy, which causes them to feel vulnerable, can puzzle others, who may find them aloof or at least hard to get to know.

These proclivities can effect their intimate relationships since commitment, even in the short term, may threaten their need for freedom, for 'space', as well as their self-contained emotional security system. They can turn decidedly 'cool' or disappear altogether if a lover wants to get closer. Many avoid marriage or permanent relationships for these reasons. When they do fall in love, it may be a profound experience for them, and they tend to be loyal and faithful partners after a commitment is made. There may still be problems, however, if they don't remain emotionally and physically open to emotional and physical communication after the first flush of romantic love is over. This openness also needs to be extended to family relationships and to friends, who can feel distant from them in spite of the surface friendliness, openness or optimism so often displayed by the Aquarian.

Under the influence of Uranus, their ruling planet, the Aquarian's idiosyncratic views may become obsessive and they may withdraw if they feel their views are not understood or accepted, becoming stubborn, secretive or generally uncommunicative. They may be unwilling, or if left too long, unable to return to the fold, and isolation increases, preventing them from being of service to others intellectually or practically. They can be greatly helped if they become aware of times when the positive influence of Uranus in the area of personal transformation is available to them. The greatest challenge for the Aquarian is to make the most of their giftedness, both intellectual and practical, particularly in the service of others, whilst avoiding the temptation to over-protect their emotions, or enter the extremes of eccentric behavior.
