Basic Personality

The classic Aries individual is highly energetic, self-reliant, charismatic, and impulsive. With Mars as the ruling planet, potent strengths are enhanced, especially physical and verbal energy, and the ability to reach good decisions quickly. Leadership comes easily, and there is often a good head for business, though this may be hampered somewhat if Aries becomes bored by routine, rather than pioneering a field of particular interest or operating in a stimulating environment. Aries love of approval or endorsement can often serve to stimulate your efforts. Those who know the Aries individual well, an astute employer, or a wily friend or partner, for example, may use this knowledge to mutual advantage. However, if there is an attempt to take unfair advantage, the astute discernment Aries has regarding the motives of others, will probably come into play to thwart this.

In sexual matters, the classic Arien personality can be passionate in the extreme. Here again the influence of Mars is at work. Mars strengthens the assertive sexual approach of both male and female Aries. In sexual matters their natural straightforwardness, which is inextricably linked to an uncomplicated nature, especially as far as the emotions are concerned, means that there is likely to be an absence of nuance or mystery. Whether male or female, they enjoy taking the lead in sexual matters, (as indeed in most things), and enjoy experimentation and joyful romps, usually with a permanent partner. In this regard they need to guard against natural impulsiveness, which can result in committing to a relationship too soon. They need to make sure the initial urgency for sex (which usually precludes courtship where couples get to know each other) doesn't cloud their judgment about whether the relationship is the right one. Once they have made a good match, they are unlikely to stray because of their high moral standards, and most often make good parents as well as faithful partners. Their youthful vitality means that they can enjoy sexual adventures right into old age. This is consistent with their constant need for stimulation of all kinds, and the impulsive nature of the Arien does not cease to function, even in intimate situations, throughout life.

Whether male or female, the Arien usually thrives on challenge, is hard-working and ambitious, and has a love of learning, which are all consistent with the proclivity to be one step ahead of the competition. Mars may increase their inclination to step over (or on!) others on their way to the top, adding to the perception that they are selfishly inclined. This, in turn, has been associated with the focus of the young on themselves, something echoed in the uncomplicated youthfulness of the Aries. In spite of a rather intellectual turn of mind, their child-like nature does seem to incline them towards egocentricity, though the other side of this child-likeness is their ability to 'tune in' to the playful and emotional needs of their children. Their tendency to be incautious, sometimes seen in a fiery determination or stubbornness, can also result in courageous acts. This has given rise to speculation that what looks like a courageous act on the surface, may have been simply a by-product of their natural lack of caution. Whatever the case, brave acts seem to be the exception and their hot-headed behavior most often has inappropriate or harmful results, something reflected in the character of The Ram. Rams are headstrong and tend to rush at things, such as a challenge to their territory or flocks. They can be unpredictable, often rushing without warning at anything they may take a sudden dislike (or fancy!) to, and their often rather fearsome horns can inflict real damage, not just to the object of their displeasure, but occasionally to themselves. The Ram always acts instinctually, and it is no accident that red, the color of emotion and heat, is associated with Aires in astrological tradition. The greatest challenge for the Aries is to harness their instinctive impulses and channel them to achieve their highest potential. If they succumb to the boredom factor through impulsive choice of situation, they can be hell with and to live with. Even in stimulating environments, they will always need to consider what effect their projects and activities may have on others.
