Basic Personality
Most astrologers describe the classic Gemini individual as having
a dual nature, but they struggle to present a clear picture of what
this duality is all about. They describe very well the highly strung,
quick, clever, decidedly imaginative Gemini communicator. They note
the mercurial temperament that swings the individual, usually without
warning, into the impossible-to-fathom friend or partner, the elusive,
seemingly sly flirt, or the touchy, impatient person who becomes
moody, and may send out fiery darts, or skittle you if you point
out this (or any other) fault. It has proved harder for astrologers
to clearly account for the nature of this duality, beyond pointing
out that a duality is suggested by the sign for Gemini, The Twins,
and going on to describe the mercurial temperament of the Gemini.
There is indeed a kind of duality suggested by The Twins, who
are usually depicted as identical. Identical twins are separate
people who, paradoxically, are made from exactly the same genetic
material. This can be seen as a metaphor for understanding the paradoxical
duality at the very heart of the classic Gemini personality. This
paradoxical duality may be thought of, on the one hand, as the urge
to communicate, and on the other hand as the equal urge to 'scramble'
the communication. It is as though they give out a dazzling number
of 'Welcome, do come in' signals, and then, as if suddenly afraid
that you may 'gain entry', they change the invitation into an equally
dazzling number of 'enter at your own risk' signals. Even highly
evolved Gemini individuals find it hard to account for this. For
further explanation, we must look to various solar elements, especially
Mercury, Gemini's ruling planet.
Mercury greatly influences how we communicate with one another,
and this is especially so for the Mercury-ruled Gemini individual,
who considers communication with others to be 'life itself' so to
speak. It is easy to observe that the classic Gemini has great facility
with language, is entertaining, thought-provoking, intellectually
sharp, and witty as well as imaginative (sometimes in the extreme),
good at winning arguments, and able to make emotional connections
with others in a way others envy. However, whilst Mercury encourages
communication, it also promotes stress and tension, nervousness
and anxiety. Even whilst in the act of communicating, the Gemini
is often observed initially as being quite hesitant, nervous, or
tripping over the tongue, as the anxiety to 'be heard' builds. Although
this is overcome as they follow their urge to communicate, it is
not as easy for them as others might think. It may be said, then,
that the nature of Mercury's influence, which both encourages and
hinders the Gemini in the same primary pursuit - that of communicating
with others - is also a paradoxical duality, and gives further insight
into the complex nature of the classic Gemini individual.
Intimate relationships are never dull or boring, a state that is
intolerable to the Gemini individual, who is either up or down,
hot or cold, overwhelmed by feelings or using their sharp minds
to gain perspective, with no middle ground. They are helped if lovers
or partners can take the mercurial swings without being swept up
in them. Lovers or partners will benefit from Gemini's great freedom
of expression and sexual intensity, though may be alarmed at Gemini's
free attitude to flirtations. They make good parents who are able
to communicate with their children even into their teens, and they
are usually aware enough to protect them against the more negative
aspects of their mercurial mood swings. The challenge for you as
a Gemini is to work through your boredom at those times when it
is important to your well-being to accomplish something, and to
find the middle ground between your mood changes and your instinct
for sociability.
