Many of the Zodiac signs can be traced back 3000 years, including
the sign for Scorpio, the rampant scorpion. One of the earliest
representations was found on Babylonian 'kuddurus' or boundary
stones in the 10th Century BC.

Zodiac Origins
Scorpio is the eighth sign of the Zodiac, and the seven-starred
constellation near Libra and Orion that was known to Homer in Greece
in the 9th Century BC. The scorpion, the sign for Scorpio, is thought
of today, as in ancient times, as a dangerous creature, and traditionally
this has been linked to aspects of the classic Scorpio personality.
In this regard, it is interesting to realize that the scorpion
is the only animal that can kill itself, whether deliberately or
not, and it is true that many Scorpios suffer from the poison of
jealousy, or of ego-inflation, which causes them to focus on (and
thereby exaggerate) what has been done to them. They can strike
with a lightning-fast instinct at anyone who has not given them
what they want, but inadvertently suffer themselves from the stings
they administer to others who have threatened or enraged them. This
is because their stings not only hurt their victims (intended) but
poison Scorpio's relationships, especially love relationships, sometimes
fatally (unintended).
